The Puccini family was established in Lucca as a local musical dynasty by Puccini’s great-great grandfather – also named Giacomo (1712–1781). He was one of nine children of Michele Puccini and Albina Magi. Puccini was born Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini in Lucca in Tuscany, in 1858. While his early work was rooted in traditional late-19th-century romantic Italian opera, he successfully developed his work in the realistic verismo style, of which he became one of the leading exponents. Puccini has been called “the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi”. In 1926 his son arranged for the transfer of his father’s remains to a specially created chapel inside the Puccini villa at Torre del Lago, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy.
He was buried in Milan, in Toscanini’s family tomb, but that was always intended as a temporary measure. The opera was immediately stopped, and the orchestra played Chopin’s Funeral March for the stunned audience. News of his death reached Rome during a performance of La bohème.
